Check out my final project for one of my fashion design classes at FIT
Hello everyone! I hope you are all doing well and staying safe.
What a semester this has been and I am proud of everyone who managed to finish the year even with all the the lockdowns and COVID-19 related challenges. Personally, this was a very unusual semester for me, since on March I had to switch from being on campus in South Korea to online classes at home in Florida. I was also subjected to quarantine at both locations. Taking online fashion classes from the other side of the world...well, you can sort of imagine how that was! However, it became my goal to work my best and finish off the semester with projects that reflected my growth and passion for fashion design. With that said, I want to show you a glimpse of my final project for one of my favorite fashion design classes.
Le Classic Rock Fall/Winter 2021

This is the title of my final collection for my Fashion Art Studio class. All students were given a list of designers to choose from and I decided to work with Yves Saint Laurent (YSL). The goal of the project was to design a modern-looking collection, yet reflecting the original looks of the designer's house with day-wear looks and evening-wear looks. After studying YSL's original work, I decided to go with these famous looks from the 60's: "Le Smoking" (women's suit) and his "First Sheer Designs" (garments). Both styles were bold and liberating for women in the 60's and continue to be praised by the fashion community today. After choosing a designer, students had to choose a muse for their collection that was alive and popular during that time. I combined YSL with the Rock Classic look of the 70's, another popular movement at that time.
During the 70’s, rock bands topped the charts and influenced fashion around the world. This was a time for the classic rock look. Both YSL and rock were important factors of the fashion community during the 60's and 70's and I wanted to combine elegant silhouettes of YSL with the boldness and vibrancy of the Rock Classic look. Anita Pallenberg became my muse since she was an important fashion icon for her mix of boho and Rock Classic looks. Anita Pallenberg was a German-Italian model, actress, artist, and "IT Girl" of the 60's and 70's. She influenced both music and style of the Rolling Stones. This made her a perfect fit for my collection, since she was unique, flamboyant, fashionable and had a direct connection to the Rock Classic movement.
If you are not familiar with YSL's Le Smoking and his First Sheer Designs from the 60's, here are a couple of images I used for inspiration!
Important details for the collection
In the Rock Classic movement, band members would leave their hair long and dress with a combination of the 60s hippie/boho and the 70s sartorial fashion. It was common to see blazers, suits, flared jeans, velvet trousers, satin shirts, fringed boots, bold colors and accessories. This collection will be Fall/Winter and includes elements from 70’s Rock Classic/boho look, including: button down satin shirts, flared trousers, ruffles, suits, fur and sheer fabrics. Anita Pallenberg not only used this Rock Classic look on her daily outfits, she also incorporated other boho accessories, which the Rolling Stones started using once she became a groupie and Keith Richards' partner. With that said, I also included pieces that Anita Pallenberg used and influenced the Rolling Stones, like: floppy hats with feathers, jewelry, scarfs and boots.

After my research, I managed to combine the 60's YSL "Le Smoking" and sheer garments with the Rock Classic look from the 70's.

I hope you enjoy my project and my final designs. In order to make a project like this one students go through weeks of intensive research and one-on-one meetings with the professor in order to fully develop the ideas and sketches. It is very important to be engaged with your ideas to produce a project that makes sense and captures the design's objective. I am very proud at my significant improvement in both drawing and researching, compared to last semester. I will continue to share my progress!!! Hoping next semester will be as successful and fruitful as this one was. Enjoy!
Thank you for reading!
xoxo,
