We all know about New York, Milan, and Paris Fashion Week, BUT have you heard about what goes on at Seoul Fashion Week?

Fashion Week is an essential event in the fashion industry. It is where designers get to showcase their masterpieces, for their Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer collections, all around the world. Designers set the trends that will reign the year and showcase on the streets. It is definitely a dream to attend these shows!!! Little by little, there have been more countries joining in and inviting people to discover new cultures and styles. In the last couple years, Asia has been killing the game!

Seoul Fashion Week is the highlight of Korean fashion and people from all around the world come and view the shows of top Korean designers. Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) becomes the central of fashion, in South Korea, for the months of March and October. Being a student at South Korea, I was intrigued by what fashion would be like in Asia compared to Western style. Fashion Week does not only belong to the designers and models, but also to the fashion lovers who attend the shows. Most of the people who visit or come see shows end up featured in magazines and websites because they arrive dressed up in the latest trends. Koreans and people visiting SFW help set up the atmosphere of not only what is trending on the runway, but what is being used in the streets as well. It is a celebration of Korean fashion coming together with different cultures. It is definitely crowded but breathtaking to see so many people come together to celebrate fashion.

As a freshman at SUNY Korea, I had the opportunity to volunteer at SFW Spring / Summer 2019 (Seoul Fashion Week) last Fall and get the exclusives on what truly goes on back stage before and during shows. There are models running everywhere, photographers trying to get a hold of the new collections, and designers making last minute changes to their pieces. As a volunteer, I had the opportunity to help out in a couple shows with quick changes. I would wait back stage for the models to come and dress them accordingly to what the designer wanted. I got to work with designers like KYE, Nohant, and Choi Boko. It was very stressful since the models had less than 2 minutes to change into their next outfits. I had to work as fast as I could yet make them look as good as possible. I got to see what the life of a model and designer was really like before and after the shows. Nothing but stress fills the air as the models are anxiously waiting for their turn to hit the runway and show off as best as they can the designer's vision! With the help of lights, models, music, and decorations the designer is able to successfully portray the feeling of their collections. It is an INCREDIBLE yet stressful environment that all fashion design students must experience!

Here are a few looks I was able to find and share with you all! I was in charge of the quick changes of these models.

These are KYE and Nohant pieces!

SFW Fall / Winter 2019

I was not able to attend SFW this Spring, but I, of course, read and saw the collections online! I had a couple friends who had the opportunity to go and get their pictures taken! On the right, we have an example of what the atmosphere was like this year at SFW. The people attending SFW portrayed a very street style and urban feeling in their outfits. This trend has been very popular this year and has definitely left a mark in Korean fashion as seen by what the people were wearing.

I will be returning to Seoul Fashion Week this Fall and hope to experience a completely new atmosphere from the new collections!

Working at Seoul Fashion Week was definitely so incredible and getting a good look at Korean fashion was enriching. When I return I will try and take more pictures of the people, atmosphere, and outfits I find are breathtaking to share with you all. Until then, I will have to start planning soon some outfits to take with me!

If you ever find yourself visiting Seoul in March or October, make sure to swing by Dongdaemun Design Plaza and experience Korean fashion at its finest!
